Where is the friendliest place you have been?
New Orleans for me, but I found the blacks and gays to be much friendlier than the standard whites

The least friendly place I've been to is also in Germany.

I’ve rarely been to unfriendly places to be fair. Portuguese are lovely but I really can’t single out any people because they have all been lovely.

Never had a bad experience in Newcastle which I have been to around 10 times now for football and work. Maybe I just didn't act the cunt from down south but I found everyone from old bill, bar staff, stewards at football, hotel staff and joe public all very accommodating

Northern England (apart from fucking Leeds), and Scotland, in the UK.

I even got into a friendly row about football in Glasgow - bizarrely, because I was supporting an Italian team against Arsenal, but there was no undercurrent of impending violence.

Two spring to mind.
Jutland in Denmark, very open and friendly helped by the fact they all speek English.
Zurich. Everyone I came accross was very friendly and, contrary to the their reputation, for all the Swiss-Germans I met, fun is very much on the agenda.
Neither group have any time for Germans at all and the Danes think Swedes are, in general, humourless gits.

Re: Where is the friendliest place you have been?
Sudan, hands down. Arrived in the country while backpacking through Africa, a trip which I thought I'd thought of everything for. We arrived in Khartoum just about out of money to find that the only ATM in the country didn't accept US-issued cards, which most were. We'd used the USD we had with us getting from the border - aside from a little Sudanese change we had a £5 note.

We were staying in a little family-run hotel (we didn't realise our situation when we arrived at gone midnight). We spoke to them about what was happening and they let us stay for three days for free - they even fed us at times. They couldn't do enough for us and took great pleasure in it.

While struggling to find a bus out of Khartoum and into Ethiopia, people were trying to help us but the language barrier proved to be too much. A man at the bus station took it upon himself to close his shop, find the bus, book it and even pay for it. He enlisted other people on the bus to help us once we got across the border as well, which they did.

Most people are good and like to help, but the Sudanese went above and beyond for complete strangers. Other Sudanese that we briefly encountered were also really nice, helpful and friendly. They rarely spoke English but understood our situation and couldn't do enough for us.

Vanuatu. Great people. Stayed in the Capital Port Vila. Couldn’t work out though why everytime I ordered food or drink they would say “Thanks Thomas”.

In the end I asked someone why Everyone kept calling me Thomas. He explained that they were actually saying “Thanks Ta Much” as they speak pigeon English there whatever the f@ck that is.

Atlanta, Kiel and most Greeks in the Greek islands.

I travelled along the east coast in America during 1979 and ended up in a black neighbourhood in Atlanta. When they heard our English accents they were very friendly and couldn’t do enough for us.

In Kiel About 10 years ago, the northern Germans seemed very friendly and helpful.
